The Rogers Centre is home to the Toronto Blue Jays. Seeing a baseball game is a typically North American and affordable experience. Now that’s a treat! I’ll tell you all about it in this article so that you, too, can enjoy the experience.

The Toronto Blue Jays team

The Toronto Blue Jays were founded in 1977, becoming the second Canadian team in Major League Baseball (MLB). Back-to-back World Series victories in 1992 and 1993 are the team’s two major milestones.

Toronto’s Rogers Centre, formerly known as the SkyDome, became home to the Blue Jays in 1989. It can accommodate over 49,000 people. The special feature of this course is its retractable roof. When the roof is open, you have an unobstructed view of the CN Tower. However, when it’s cold – or raining – I can assure you that you’re glad it can be closed!

When is the best time to see a baseball game at Toronto’s Rogers Centre?

The baseball season generally runs from April to October. If you’re looking for an electric atmosphere, I recommend attending a baseball game during the summer months, from June to August. Also, go for a weekend game, which attracts more people.

For a more relaxed atmosphere, opt for a weekday game on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. You should also opt for the beginning of the season, from April to May, when the stakes are lower.

How do I buy tickets to see a baseball game?

To see a Blue Jays game at Toronto’s Roger Centre, you can buy tickets directly from the Blue Jays’ official website. Another option is to buy through Ticketmaster. Once you’ve logged on to one of these sites, you’ll be able to view upcoming games and ticket prices. Prices vary, of course, depending on your seat and the match. However, having seen 4 baseball games, each time from the very top, I assure you that you can enjoy the game too!

If you don’t use one of the above sites, make sure they’re authorized dealers. Scams can happen very quickly. Because, yes, there are careless people everywhere.

How much does it cost to see a baseball game at Toronto’s Rogers Centre?

Tickets for a baseball game start at around C$25 and can go up to C$350 and more. Clearly more affordable than a basketball or field hockey game.

Prices vary, of course, depending on the stakes of the game itself and your location. Personally, I’ve attended several games where I was seated in sections 528 to 532. Tickets were around C$35 per person.

My advice here is to get your tickets as early as possible. Especially if you’re going with a large group, it’s still better to be seated together!

Getting to the Rogers Centre in Toronto

The Rogers Centre is located right in the heart of Toronto. So it’s easy to get there by public transport. The easiest way is to take either line 1 of the subway, or the GO train, and stop at Union. From Union, it’s about a 10-minute walk to the stadium.

The Basic Rules of Baseball

To enjoy a Blue Jays game at the Rogers Centre Toronto, or simply for your culture, here are the basic rules of baseball.

  • A baseball game is divided into 9 halves.
  • Each half is divided into 2 parts: one in which one team attacks and the other defends, and the second in which the roles are reversed.
  • The defending team is made up of 9 players.
  • The attacking team is made up of the “hitters”, the people who will hit the ball.
  • The aim of the attacking team is to hit the ball and run around the pitch. When a player completes a full turn, the team scores 1 point.
  • The “batter” of the attacking team may advance only in the following cases:
    • If he reaches a base after hitting the ball and before his opponents have had a chance to hit the ball. Note: if the ball he has hit is caught directly by an opposing player, he is out. If the ball reaches the base before the batter, he is also out.
    • If the pitcher of the defending team throws the ball 4 times out of the pitching zone. In concrete terms, the pitcher must throw the ball into a precise zone that is not visible to the naked eye but is represented by a rectangle on television.
    • If the pitcher touches the batter while throwing the ball.
  • The “batter” of the attacking team is eliminated in the following cases:
    • If he misses 3 times when the ball is considered good.
    • If the ball he has hit is directly caught by a player from the opposing team.
    • If the ball reaches the base before he does.
  • When 3 batters are out, the defending team goes on the attack.
  • At the end of 9 innings, the team with the most points wins.

I assure you, it’s not that complicated once you get the hang of it!

My Tips for Enjoying a Toronto Blue Jays Game

1/ Arrive early. I recommend arriving about 30 minutes early. This will give you time to get to your gate, pass through security, and look around the stadium.

2/ Grab yourself something to eat and/or drink. The choice of food is much more limited than at Scotiabank Arena. Nevertheless, it’s always a pleasure to be able to eat and/or drink while watching the game. Especially as matches can be very long (3-4 hours)!

3/ Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly. Ok, thanks for the advice, Gwen. Let me explain. If you’re going to a match on a midsummer afternoon, remember to pack a cap and sun cream. The stadium roof will be open and you’ll be in direct sunlight for hours.

4/ Enjoy. Whether it’s the national anthem before the start of the game, possible home runs, or any twists and turns, don’t hesitate to soak up the atmosphere (or set the mood). Let’s Go Blue Jays!

A final word

Attending a Blue Jays baseball game at Toronto’s Roger Centre was on my bucket list. Between you and me, I really thought I’d be bored. However, I was pleasantly surprised that I wasn’t! Indeed, it’s the perfect sport to sit back, have a drink, and chat with friends while watching the match. So, are you convinced?

La Bise,

Gwen
