Renting a car in Canada is a convenient and flexible way to discover this vast country. However, it can be confusing not knowing how it’s done. Find out all the details about renting a car in Canada in this article. I will detail the car rental companies in Canada as well as the step-by-step process to rent a car.

Choosing one of the car rental companies in Canada

Before booking a car rental, it’s essential to do your research thoroughly. Compare different car rental agencies to find the one that offers you the best rates and conditions. Also check rental policies, including additional charges, insurance conditions and driver’s license requirements.

Canada is home to many reputable car rental companies, offering a wide range of vehicles to suit every need. Among the most popular are:

  • Enterprise: This agency offers a wide choice of cars and has numerous branches across the country. Their rates are generally competitive.
  • Hertz: Hertz is another well-established company in Canada, offering a wide variety of rental cars. They also have an attractive loyalty program for regular customers.
  • Avis: Avis is an international car rental agency offering reliable service and competitive rates. They are known for their well-maintained fleet.
  • Turo: Turo is not a car rental agency, but a platform that connects individuals who want to rent their car with those who are looking for one.

I advise you to compare the rates and offers offered by each agency before making your choice. You can go directly to their websites or use online price comparison tools such as Priceline to find the best deal.

Check rental conditions

Before you reserve your rental car, make sure you understand the terms and conditions of each rental agency. Rental conditions may vary, but here are the documents generally required:

  • Valid driver’s license: this is obvious, but you’ll need to present your valid driver’s license. Some agencies may also require an international driver’s license.
  • Credit card: A valid credit card is generally required to make the reservation and to cover any additional costs or damages. Don’t be surprised if the agency charges you a deposit. It’s usually around C$500 and is completely normal. It will be returned to you as soon as the car has been returned.
  • Minimum age: Most rental agencies require the driver to be at least 21 years old. Some also charge a higher price for young drivers (usually those under 25).

Rental terms and conditions will be indicated at the time of booking. I urge you to read them carefully to make sure you meet all the requirements.

Proceed to book

Once you’ve found what you’re looking for, I recommend you book directly. This will guarantee vehicle availability and buy you peace of mind. What’s more, booking in advance can save you money by benefiting from preferential rates.

Most rental agencies offer online booking, which makes the process much easier. When booking, you’ll need to provide information such as rental dates, pick-up and drop-off location, driver details and payment details. Note that some agencies offer to pick up a car at one location and drop it off at another, usually for an additional fee. This could be a good idea if you’re planning a road trip to Canada.

At the time of booking, most rental agencies offer basic insurance. Please note that car rental is usually included if you pay the rental fee with your credit card. Don’t hesitate to ask your bank for more information. Otherwise, I strongly recommend that you take out insurance. You can either subscribe directly to the agency’s insurance policy or take out independent insurance such as RentalCover, which will cost you two or even three times less for similar coverage.

Picking up your rental car

On the day of your rental, go to the car rental company you’ve chosen. Make sure you bring all the required documents, including your driver’s license and credit card.

At the agency, you’ll be asked to sign a rental contract and pay the rental fee. Take the time to read the contract carefully and ask questions if anything is unclear.

Before taking possession of the car, thoroughly inspect its condition. Note any damage and inform the rental agency immediately. Also, take photos for visual evidence. This will prevent you from being held responsible for pre-existing damage when you return the car. I’ve never had any problems, but better safe than sorry.

Enjoy your car rental in Canada

That’s it! You’ve finally picked up your rental car and are ready to set off on your Canadian adventure. Make sure you respect the local rules of the road, including speed limits, parking regulations and alcohol laws, which vary from province to province. For example, you can turn right at a red light (after making sure the way is clear, of course) throughout Canada EXCEPT in Montreal. You’ll also notice that nobody respects the 100 km/h speed limit on the highway. That’s because the fines only start if you’re stopped above 120 km/h.

By following these simple steps, you’ll be able to rent a car in Canada with complete peace of mind. Take advantage of this freedom to explore the wonders Canada has to offer!
